Thank You Letter from the Highest Scoring Ace from Vietnam

George,

Thank you so much for providing my family and I with an outstanding and very informative tour of your World War II Museum. Your willingness to open up your museum for a tour last night at 7:30pm was greatly appreciated. My wife and I are visiting from Oklahoma City and my brother wanted me to see your museum but, on family visits like we were on, time is a premium. My brother and his family and my wife and I really enjoyed the way you explained each uniform and who wore it and what that person did during the war. It made a big impression on my nephew.

As a Weapon Systems Officer in the F-4 Phantom II, I flew 220 combat missions in Vietnam during 1972, 96 of those missions were flown in North Vietnam. I was very fortunate to have survived some very dangerous missions and ended up being credited with shooting down 4 MiG-21 and 2 MiG-19 jet fighters in dog fights over North Vietnam, most in the Hanoi area. After the war I attended USAF Pilot Training before going back to the F-4 as an aircraft commander.

Your narrative helps to ensure that the current generation of young people know what their grandparents did to ensure this country remained free. Hopefully, today’s young people will ask their parents and grand parent what they did for this country in it’s time of need.

Thanks again for going out of the way to provide a very informative after hours tour. I know you did not expect to spend Saturday evening touring people around your museum. You provided information that you do not hear at other museums we have attended.

Best Regards,

Charles “Chuck” DeBellevue Colonel, USAF (Retired)

Leading Ace from the Vietnam War
